| Birth* | Gerald Fitzgerald of Moret was born in 1546 at Timogue Castle, Queen's County, Ireland; Some doubt exists about his legitimacy. His father, the 11th Earl of Kildare was said to have been married to Ellinor O'Kelly by Leverous, (later Bishop of Kildare). However, because of the machinations of the 11th Earl's infamous brother, he was outlawed and attainted . For several years, his son Gerald was concealed and brought up by his mother's family. During this period, the report of illegitimacy was given credence, and as a consequence, Gerald lost his claim to the Earldom, which was passed to his brother Henry (of the Battleaxes).1 |

- When Lord Thomas ("silken Thomas") the 10th Earl was executed together with his 5 uncles, acts of attainder completed the ruin of the family. But his half-brother Gerald, a mere boy, was carried away and after years abroad, returned to England after the death of Henry VIII. To propitiate the Irish, Edward VI restored his estates in 1552.
Mary I rewarded him for service during the Wyat rebellion creating him Earl of Kildare, and Lord offaly on May 13th 1554, but the old earldom (though the contrary is alleged) remained under attainder. However, the acts attainting his family were repealed in 1569, and the old earldom was thus regained.
Although he conformed to Protestantism under Elizabeth and served agaist the Munster rebels and their Spanish allies, he was imprisoned in the Tower in 1582 under suspicion of treason. - [S67] Britannica.

| Birth* | 8th Earl of Kildare Gerald Fitzgerald was born circa 1456 at Ireland.2 |
| He was the son of 7th Earl of Kildare Thomas Fitzgerald and Jane Fitzgerald.2,3 | |
| Anecdote | In 1477 he became the 8th Earl of Kildare. In 1478 he succeeded to the chief governorship. He was named by Ireland as "Gerait Mor" - Gerald the Great. Became famous as "the great earl", or Mor The Great. Also known as Garret More Fitzgerald. The earl's sister married Conn More O'Neill and their son Conn Bacach O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, married his cousin Alice, the earl's daughter. In the tradition of the Fitzgeralds, the earl displayed an interest in both the languages and cultures of Ireland. The breadth of his interests can, to some extent, be gathered from his library which contained works in Latin, French, English, and Irish. Drawing to himself the loyalty of both Gaelic and Anglo-Irish, he came closer than anyone else to embodying a spirit representative of the whole of Ireland. Clearly, the earl was a potential threat to English rule in Ireland.2 |
