| Birth* | John Brown was born on 2 January 1859 at Otonabee Twp, Peterborough, ON, Canada.1 |
| Anecdote* | From a letter of Charles Carter, son. "Sarah Jane would talk back to him [her father] when he became too unreasonable, how he hated that! When she told him that she was going to marry John Brown, whom my father disliked because he was quite an accomplished violinist and played at times for dances, which my father looked upon as the stepping stone to Hell, she was told to give up this thought of marriage or leave his house at once. She packed her personal belongings, left and they were married, she never was permitted to come home again. Years later she was stricken with a severe case of pneumonia and it was thought the end was near. My father was notified that if he wished to see her alive, he should go to her. This he did and forgave her for all her defiance of his authority, and so peace was declared. However she double-crossed him and recovered, the truce was declared off, and though she lived several years thereafter, was never permitted to visit home. |

This is puzzling, because Norwood is several miles away from Otonabee where the family farm was. Possibly he was born in a hospital or nursing home in Norwood, although in those days most births were at home.
