Birth*James Beattie was born on 2 November 1843 at Prescott, ON, Canada.1 
Anecdote*He moved to Wallaceburg with his family when he was a child. It was a frontier-like hamlet at that time. He purchased a general store in 1871and in 1888 built the Beattie Block on the northwest corner of Nelson and James Streets. This block contained several businesses and the Queens Hotel. The block burned in 1897 but the cornerstone remains. He is considered to be one of the "town fathers".
