I stumbled across a book entitled 'Marriage Bonds of Ontario 1803-1834' (I didn't realize they existed in Ontario back then), and found the following listing on page 149: CARTER, Robert of Otonabee & Elen McMahon, alias Bavis b. Thomas Tupper and Thomas Bavis both of Monaghan, 5 June 1830 at Peterborough [1846] The b. is an abbreviation for bondsmen, the number in square brackets is the bond number, and the date is, I believe, the date on which the bond was registered. The bonds are housed in the archives somewhere. The full reference is: Marriage Bonds of Ontario 1803-1834, Thomas B. Wilson, Huntingdon House, Lambertville, New Jersey 1985 ISBN 0-912606-26-6 There is also a book entitled 'Marriage Notices of Ontario' that was published in 1980 by the same company - it contains transcripts of marriages notices in various Ontario newpapers of the 19th century. Didn't find anything of much interest there. David Beavis.3,4 |

| Death* | Ellen (Helen) Miller died on 3 June 1908 at Peterborough, Peterborough, ON, Canada, at age 54; FOUND DEAD THIS MORNING Mrs Andrew Cameron Died Suddenly About Eight O'Clock HER HUSBAND IN HASTINGS Wednesday June 3 1908 Mrs Andrew Cameron was found dead this morning at her home, 541 Homewood avenue at 10 o'clock, having died suddenly after an attack of what probaby uraemic convulsions. Mrs Cameron had been living alone the past few days, her husband being in Hastings on business. This morning about 10 o'clock Mrs Zett, one of the nearest neighours, noticing Mrs Cameron's absence from the premises, called at her house, and found Mrs Cameron lying on the dining-room floor. Mrs Zett hurriedly called Mrs Walter Stocker, and on re-entering, it was found that Mrs Cameron was dead. She was fully dressed and apparently had fallen from a chair. There were evidences that the deceased lady had struggled as a result of the convulsions. Dr McCullough was called and stated that she had been dead about two hours. A telephone message was sent to Mr Cameron in Hastings, who started immediately to drive to Peterborough. The late Mrs Cameron was a daughter of the late Mr John Miller of Otonabee. Two brothers, John and William, are well-known residents of that township.3

Hugh Nelson Cameron1
b. 1866, d. 13 June 1941
| Birth* | Hugh Nelson Cameron was born in 1866 at Asphodel Twp, Peterborough, ON, Canada; It's not certain whether he was born in Asphodel or Otonabee, as there were Cameron houses on each side of the boundary line. The following is an excerpt from an email from Barbara Milburn:
"The CAMERONs had houses on the CAMERON line which is the boundary line between Asphodel & Otonabee twp. There was only one house in Asphodel Lot 13, Con 1 which was where the log home was [later stone house]. Cameron cemetery was on this farm. Across the street in Otonabee there was several CAMERON houses. In these houses James & Ewen CAMERON brought up their families. My grandmother was born in a CAMERON house on L21, Con 1, Otonabee twp. Hugh first farmed the log house home farm and then moved into the stone house built in 1867 on Lot 13, C1, Asphodel twp. So, I have most of this family born in Asphodel twp., so I guess it depends on which CAMERON house he was born in. The story goes, I think that Donald moved into the house at L 21, C1, Otonabee after marrying Catherine NELSON, his second wife. I got to visit this house a few years ago & the wife showed me where the birthing room [the parlor] used to be under the old staircase."2 |
